The Bad Side of Egg Donation…Allegedly.
July 4, 2012 in egg donor blog by Kate
Why is it still such a secret that hormone imbalance problems and even psychosis after using these medications a possibility. I have experienced it first hand. I was an egg donor and have huge problems as a result. It happened to me after the birth of my own child. And there is little out there informing donors that their excess embyos will most likely go to stem cell research, an industry I never intended to get involved in.
I’m sorry you have had such a negative experience with egg donation. I was a donor seven times, spanning 4 years and neither during, nor after, were there bad–or even so much as lingering–effects. Egg donation is by no means something to enter into lightly. I was asked to sign a waiver (that I was not, in any way, pressured to sign) that said stem cell research may or may not be something that happens with my eggs once they’re retrieved. If you’re not on board with that, then you needn’t sign the release. Based on many of the questions I get, people have a very romanticized view of egg donation …helping out a family, giving the gift of life, etc, etc, etc…. Egg donation is a business; it’s a business that gets ALL up in your business. And once you sign your consents and receive your pay, the eggs–and any child–that result are not your business, to be frank. As such, I say over and over and over and over again: Make sure egg donation is 100% something you want to do. Research it, research it, research it. No reservations. I’m not you, so I can’t speak to any sort of psychosis you’ve experienced, during donations or your pregnancy, or otherwise; but I can assure anyone who is reading this that I’ve not heard of any side effects even remotely like this–and I, personally, didn’t experience side effects at all.
